If you hate shaving, plucking, or tweezing, you’re far from alone. Laser hair removal has become one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States. At Front Range Family Medicine, we use the Cynosure Icon™ Aesthetic System, one of the most advanced laser hair removal systems available.
During the procedure, the laser targets the hair of the area you want treated, whether it’s your upper lip, chin, legs, bikini line, armpits, or chest. The beam passes through the skin to individual hair follicles and damages them so they cease growing hair.
While most older laser technology can’t treat people with skin of color because the laser can’t distinguish well enough between the dark skin and the dark hair, the Icon laser technology can treat fair or darker skin. Good candidates are simply people, men and women, who are self-conscious about unwanted hair and looking for an alternative to shaving, waxing, and bleaching.
Before your procedure, an expert provider from Front Range Family Medicine goes over the preparation you need to follow, such as avoid plucking, waxing, and electrolysis until the day of your procedure. You’ll also need to stop smoking and avoid aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs.
On the day of your visit, you receive a numbing lotion to make you more comfortable during the procedure. The Icon laser targets the hair of the area you want treated without damaging neighboring skin. The procedure takes 15-45 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.
There is no downtime, so you can return to work or your other daily activities immediately after the procedure -- but you should avoid direct sunlight on your treated skin. You may see some redness and swelling of the area, but those side effects usually disappear within a few days.
Most people see results immediately. The laser procedure treat the hair that is visible and in the growth stage. Within a few months, hair follicles that were in the transitional or resting stages may grow back and require another treatment. That’s why most people have four to six treatments, depending on the size of the area, to maximize their hair removal.
