Stretch Marks Q&A

Front Range Family Medicine

What are stretch marks?

Stretch marks are slightly indented lines that appear on your breasts, hips, stomach, buttocks, upper arms, and thighs. No two stretch marks look alike. They can be pink, red, black, blue or purple. They appear anywhere you may gain a large amount of weight rapidly. Your skin stretches to accommodate this rapid weight increase, producing stripes and streaks, also called stria or scars.

Stretch marks appear on both men and women, but women tend to get them more, especially during pregnancy. In fact, 50-90% of pregnant women get stretch marks.

Prolonged use of corticosteroid creams also contributes to the formation of stretch marks, because corticosteroid decreases levels of collagen, the substance responsible for skin elasticity and strength.

Stress is another cause of stretch marks. Stress produces the hormone cortisol, which is converted into cortisone. Cortisone weakens the elastic fibers in your skin.

How can I get rid of stretch marks?

In some cases, stretch marks go away on their own or fade enough to make them barely noticeable. At Front Range Family Medicine, a provider examines your stretch marks and determines the best treatment to help you fade them quickly.

Treatment options include lotions, creams, and oils that target scars and other skin abnormalities. Microdermabrasion, a facial procedure that uses tiny crystals to buff off the top layer of your skin, and collagen boosters, may also help fade or smooth out stretch marks.

At Front Range Family Medicine, we offer the Icon™ Aesthetic System by Cynosure, which is an advanced laser used to treat stretch marks, as well as other skin issues such as wrinkles, sun damage, and spider veins.

How does the Icon laser work to treat stretch marks?

The Icon is a fractional laser technology that delivers pulsed energy to the skin to stimulate collagen production. Increased collagen production helps even out skin discoloration as well as smooth out grooves and lines.

This in-office treatment typically lasts about 30 minutes. Most patients require between three to five treatments for maximum effectiveness. The Icon system provides a special cooling system, making the procedure more comfortable and minimizing downtime after the procedure.
